Villages, farms and raids

Build a hearth and you found a village. Everything you build in its land, which reaches further from the hearth with each tier, is the village, and nothing of the night comes within the hearth's light.

Growing a village

You learn the hearth after building your first campfire. It costs 10 logs, 12 stone and 4 sticks, and works as a cooking fire too. You can have one village for now. Click the hearth (or □ beside it) to open the Village window, which ticks off what the next tier still needs.

The village's land

Each tier's land reaches further from the hearth, marked by boundary stones and a ring on the map, and only what stands inside it counts toward the village. The founder builds there, and can build any piece in it, learned or not. Others build there only if the founder allows them; anyone else can still bring things.

Settlers

Once there are beds and room, settlers arrive on their own. Each takes whichever job has the fewest hands, and you can talk to them to hear how they are and change their job. Ask one to teach you and they take you through the first steps of their trade for a little gold. Every few minutes they bring their goods to the village's chests: logs from the woodcutter, sticks and fibre from the forager, stone from the stonecutter, wheat and carrots from the farmer.

Each settler eats one food a day from the chests. Hungry settlers stop working, and if the hunger goes on for two days, they leave.

Raids

Once your village is a hamlet with at least two settlers, some nights a horn sounds: raiders are gathering out in the dark. You get a short warning, then they march on the hearth. Anything built in their way, a wall, a fence, a palisade, a shut gate, they stop and batter until it breaks. A raider who reaches the hearth grabs food from your chests and runs. Kill a runner and you get the food back.

Beat them all without losing anything and the village pays you. Raiders still about at dawn slip away. A watchtower gives you earlier warning, and stone walls hold far longer than wood. During a raid your settlers shelter at their beds.

Farming

Till open ground with a pitchfork, plant seeds in the tilled plot, water the crop and pick it when it is ripe. Ten crops grow in real time through four stages, and keep growing while the game is closed. Watering once per stage makes them grow faster. A ripe crop glows a little. A planter machine can tend a field for you; see Machines.

Ranching

Build a pen: a patch of ground closed in on every side by fences, gates or walls. Put a feeding trough inside and fill it. Tame a chicken, sheep, cow or pig and lead it in, and it settles there. While the trough has feed, it makes eggs, wool, milk or truffles every so often, even while you are away. A label over the animal tells you when something is ready. Sheep need a blade to shear and cows a bucket to milk.
